Random Acts of KindnessTammy rushed into the Starbucks around the corner from the office with only fifteen minutes to spare before she would be officially late. She hoped against all odds that the coffee hot spot would be empty, even though it was 8:30 in the morning and the city was teeming with cubicle dwelling paper pushers like herself, desperate for a caffeine fix before subjecting themselves to another eight hours in the trenches.
Predictably, her hopes were denied as she ran into a solid wall of people all massing toward the cash registers. The line was long enough that she was only feet from the door and barely able to get a glimpse of the frantic cashiers at the other side of the shop. Tammy felt her heart sink as she considered the likely idea that she would have to suck down the free decaf coffee from the break room -- she could already feel her stomach churning at the thought.

Lifemates
I sat with her in the rain. She insisted it would be refreshing. The chill settling in my skin was hardly matched by the cold feeling that ran down my spine. She was in one of her moods again.
"Stupid rain. Just look what it's done to your mascara." Shayla said. I leaned back against a nearby tree and scratched a renegade raindrop from my cheek.
"You're the one who told me sitting in the rain was cathartic. Why don't you tell me what's on your mind?" I asked. Being blunt was only good if I was persistent. I hadn't decided yet if I was patient enough to ask her repeatedly.
"Nothing, I swear. Just in the mood for something a little different. Doing things that don't make sense actually make a lot of sense to me." Shayla said. I raised an eyebrow but decided not to respond. Instead I opted to pick at the soles of my red Chuck Taylor's. The whole underside of my shoe was falling apart.
